What Is Coaching?

  • Why am I doing this?
My life purpose is to sow seeds to help others to succeed and realise their full potential. I genuinely believe in an individual's wholeness, creativity and power. I know I have the skills and abilities to bring that out. My life purpose statement is, “I’m a Shepherd Leader who empowers HIS Leaders to become the best version of themselves in the way they live, lead and love.” I want to live my life from the ‘inside-out’ and ‘from significance’ instead of ‘for significance’. With that end in mind, I entered the world of coaching in 2018. I have a strong passion for coaching/mentoring youths and leaders in the Public/Social Service Sectors.
  • What is Coaching? Who is a Coach?
According to the International Coaching Federation (ICF), “Coaching is partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.” As your coach, I honour my resourceful and creative clients as the experts of their own lives. I will listen and reflect at a deep level, always asking more of them than they ask of themselves. A coach is not a cheerleader. I will partner with you to win the game of your life, not to cheer you on from the sidelines. I will guide my clients to create authentic leadership, inspire and motivate teams, reveal true desires and build a life by design. I work with clients to create a future experience in their career, business or any area of life. Over time, through commitment, support, practice, and reflection, I will help my client transform their approach to life and career through a profound mindset shift and decision-making. "Clients often come to coaching concerned, unsure, or thrown off their game in some area of their life, seeking help to get back on top of things. When the coach is present, flexible, and open, they bring a more “coherent” energetic field, which affects the client in positive ways that are not in conscious awareness, bringing them a greater sense of calm and efficacy. It is not uncommon for a client to say to a coach, “I always feel so much better just talking to you.” Dr Carol Kauffman, founder and director of the Institute of Coaching and faculty of Harvard Medical School for over 25 years
  • What is the difference between a Coach and a Counsellor?
A ‘life coach’ is someone who helps you see where you are today, then find ways to move forward towards your goals. They do not tell you what to do; they are a sounding board to help you discover what you want to do. In general, a ‘counsellor’ is someone who creates a safe and supportive space for you to explore who you are and what you want in life. They help you identify and solve problems. They are a support system to help you gain the strength and clarity to cope and to move forward at last. Coaching is action-orientated, vs counselling is coping orientated. Coaches want to help you recognise what you think vs counsellors who help you realise how you feel. Coaching helps you set and achieve goals, vs counselling enables you to recognise and solve your problems in life. A coach has the job to challenge you frequently, vs a counsellor who is there to support you with empathy and understanding (although they might gently challenge you). A coach focuses on your potential, whereas a counsellor focuses on helping you be at peace with yourself and your life. Coaches help their clients to move forward in life, vs counsellors are trained in human development, sexuality, family dynamics, and mental health conditions. Coaches can recognise if it is old core beliefs stopping you in life, vs counsellors can also recognise if it depression, adult ADHD, or another mental health disorder that is holding you back.
